Mirror - friend or enemy?
Watching one's image and its thorough inspection significantly influences creating the picture of the body. With proper attitude, real and sensible assessment of the advantages and disadvantages of the body it may be a great motivation to undertake action directed at improving the body aesthetics. It was proved that watching one's body in the mirror - and especially watching the positive changes, can effectively support the actions, strengthen involvement, help control hunger and increase the chance of resigning from low-quality snacks. It may sound quite controversially, but high efficiency was observed in case of putting a mirror in the kitchen, especially on the fridge - the imperfect image and the desire to change it stops from grabbing a snack. Not so rarely does it happen that people eat their meals in front of a mirror... without clothes on. It's hard to tell how effective such a procedure is - however, it is said that it may prevent from overeating and motivate to further action. It's worth underlining, that watching one's body with far-reaching criticism and negative emotional load may deepen serious problems connected with the lack of acceptance of one's body - especially when there are no constructive actions connected with improving body aesthetics, or when the goals are unreal... In such cases help of a psychologist may be indispensable.
Body Dysmorphic Disorder - getting more common
Gyms and fitness clubs have many mirrors on the walls - their basic function is not only increasing the motivation and engagement. Thanks to them one can control the technique of exercises and "check" the current physical form, which is connected with many situations that seem funny for people standing nearby. However, it is more common to hear that the mirrors distract - they take away the attention from the training's essence, and they are mostly used to pry others, improve hairstyle or make-up, or take photos. The truth is, that majority of people like watching themselves in the mirrors, not only at the gym. People working on the body aesthetics, in order to confirm the progress and check on their bodies, use not only the mirrors, it's hard to walk indifferently next to a shop display or a car window without looking at a bicep or waistline getting smaller from minute to minute... It doesn't have to be a symptom of narcissism or self-worship. However, as experience shows, such behaviour may cause extremely funny situations - especially when a culprit doesn't know he's being watched...
A mirror, when used in a sensible and constructive way, can be a useful tool during work on the body aesthetics. Whereas the appearing effects can cause so much happiness that we would want to admire them in every mirror or window.
